I'm barely even a newbie on this topic. But as of this moment, I'm able
to play the mounted DVD without extra options.
$ mplayer dvd://1
I even added the switch to dump to jpg files, but apparently my system
is a tad underpowered to do that without a hitch. Still, it seems that
the video is still dumping every frame to jpg files. I hear audio,
altho choppy. I don't exactly need the audio, altho it is a good
indicator of how far along it is in the movie since dumping the video to
jpg files takes away the visual.
Is there any particular reason you have to dump the whole movie as jpeg
files? You could instead just take snapshots at appropriate points. Run
mplayer like this:
$ mplayer -vf snapshot -dvd-device /dev/dvd dvd://1
Every time you press the s key you will get a PNG snapshot. From there
you can convert the PNG image to whatever you want.
The only reason I can think to tell you is because there are subtle
variations from one frame to the next. I prefer not to spend that much
time determining which ones I want. I ripped the whole thing to jpg
files. The 100 minute movie took about 9 hours on my machine to do
that. (Surprisingly, the jpg files only take about 5G, much less than
the 22G I was expecting.) Perhaps it might have gone quicker if I had
known how to tell mplayer to forget the audio? Anyway, I am now going
thru and deleting all the files that obviously are not what I want.
After I'm done with that, I will pay more attention to the subtle
variations of the rest and make my final selections. I don't mind
choosing 1 from among 1000 subtle variations. I just don't want to have
to sit there during the playback of the movie and make those choices. I
may want to restart my PC to clean up the memory (after Firefox has
expanded way out into swap which never drops back down completely).
Lot's of things may interrupt the process. Currently, I've gone thru
almost half the jpg files and dumped probably about half of those. It's
taking time, but I'm fairly certain I will be happier doing it this way.
But thank you for telling me about the snapshot option. I shall
consider that for movies that I don't care so much about capturing all
the subtle variations.
