Yes, I have mine setup that way (assuming I understand your question
correctly).  I have a machine that has a drive /mnt/mp3 and I mount that
onto my desktop (auto mount) so I can access my music that way.  If you have
one machine to hold the music, you could just mount it on various machines
and listen, I think I've even done it with symlinks and other odd ways.

Amarok will also scan for CDRoms, USB drives etc., for music.  When you
first start it up, if you set it up that way, it will scan your collection
to see what's changed.  So if you have music on a drive that's not mounted,
Amarok either removes the music or greys out the songs that can't be played.
