I cannot recreate your problem: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~]% dnsip mail.greenesthost.com 12.184.45.102 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~]% dnsqr a mail.greenesthost.com 1 mail.greenesthost.com: 55 bytes, 1+1+0+0 records, response, noerror query: 1 mail.greenesthost.com answer: mail.greenesthost.com 86393 A 12.184.45.102 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~]% dnsqr ns greenesthost.com 2 greenesthost.com: 70 bytes, 1+2+0+0 records, response, noerror query: 2 greenesthost.com answer: greenesthost.com 86293 NS ns2.greenesthost.com answer: greenesthost.com 86293 NS ns1.greenesthost.com [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~]% dnsq a mail.greenesthost.com ns2.greenesthost.com 1 mail.greenesthost.com: 123 bytes, 1+1+2+2 records, response, authoritative, noerror query: 1 mail.greenesthost.com answer: mail.greenesthost.com 86400 A 12.184.45.102 authority: greenesthost.com 86400 NS ns2.greenesthost.com authority: greenesthost.com 86400 NS ns1.greenesthost.com additional: ns1.greenesthost.com 86400 A 12.184.45.58 additional: ns2.greenesthost.com 86400 A 12.198.195.93 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~]% dnsq a mail.greenesthost.com ns1.greenesthost.com 1 mail.greenesthost.com: 123 bytes, 1+1+2+2 records, response, authoritative, noerror query: 1 mail.greenesthost.com answer: mail.greenesthost.com 86400 A 12.184.45.102 authority: greenesthost.com 86400 NS ns2.greenesthost.com authority: greenesthost.com 86400 NS ns1.greenesthost.com additional: ns1.greenesthost.com 86400 A 12.184.45.58 additional: ns2.greenesthost.com 86400 A 12.198.195.93 My tools come from djbdns, and I find them a lot more sane than the ones from BIND. dnsip does an DNS query for an IP address. dnsqr does a DNS Query of the Root server, with a specified request. dnsq does a DNS Query from a specified server with a specified request. I did run multiple queries, and each came back the same.
