It's been about a month or so since I downloaded the knoppix dvd iso

I intended to burn a dvd, but am drawing a blank on how to even get
started. Anyone got a link or man page to point me to?
growisofs -dvd-compat -Z /dev/dvd=Knoppix.iso
See the man page for growisofs.

Any hints on whether I need to be $ or #? (I'd really prefer not to make
any coasters.) The man page talks about avoiding sudo, but doesn't specify
further, at least not that I could tell.
Are you burning DVD+R or DVD-R media? DVD+R media is not speed-dependent,
the program not keeping up won't cause a coaster.
Growisofs was originally written for the '+' media, with support later
added for '-' media. The cdrecord (or the wodim fork, which put the DVD
support in that the cdrecord author tried to charge for) started with '-',
and added '+'. Cdrecord and tries to use realtime priority, and wants to
be root for that. It'll work without it, though, if it can keep up.
Normally, growisofs doesn't need to be run as root, as long as it has write
permission on the device.
And does the command, as stated by you, automatically take care of making
it bootable? Is that something that is already built into the ISO that I
downloaded or must it be specified? The man page mentions options for
Rock-Ridge and Joliet, which IIRC are boot conventions.
Bootability and such are part of what goes into the image, affecting how
the data is constructed near the beginning. If you already have a bootable
.iso, discs made from it will also be bootable.
