The possible reason for aforementioned server pushing hack is more
political/social rather than technical.

I don't doubt there are better technologies to accomplish client<->server
communication in many cases.  The question is whether it requires any extra
work by Aunt Flossy...

1. Do all broswers support it?

2. Does it run in all broswers with no plugin installation necessary?

I'm not enough of a web browser expert to know what is the current
"lowest common denominator" in common browsers.
