Because not everyone is a Gus Wirth. Imagine all those OLPC kids turning onto
the web for the first time. We want to offer them services even if they
don't want to become a sysadmin.

That suggests you misunderstand the goals and expected uses of the OLPC
in developing countries. There is likely to be no Internet, let alone a
Web available for most of the target market of the OLPC to connect. For
all practical intents and purposes, a mesh network composed of a class
full of XO's is as close to an Internet as they're going to see.
The OLPC laptop anticipates the eventual availability of The 'Net, but
in no way expects its presence to be useful as a learning resource. It's
more about collaborative learning, and learning to learn, rather than
about accumulating information.
And it's definitely not about offering products or services.
