naw, it because Python has a cool name and is named after a cool show:
"Monty Pythons Flying Circus". ;-)  

I'm not sure why it's gained in popularity but over the past 5 years, its
popularity has grown considerably. From what I read, it dates back to the
early 90's so it's not THAT new. Something/someone seems to have gained
it attention and general acceptance and that means marketshare/mindshare.
