Part of the problem is that there is no guaranteed order to device assignment in the kernel. Module load order, timing issues, detection routines, PCI slot, and the phase of the moon all seem to have an effect on which device turns on as eth0 vs. eth1 when you have multiple devices in a system.
At least my Gentoo installation tries to renumber these based on MAC and what order it's seen them in. This was frustrating when I was cycling through several network cards trying to find one that worked. Once I figured out it was calling it 'eth4', I was able to see that it worked. I then had to just blow away the persistent list and reboot and have it back as eth0. David -- [email protected] http://www.kernel-panic.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/kplug-list
