The previous thread seems to have morphed into a bitchfest about X so
I'm gonna start a new on here with an actual question about firefox and
java.

Some history: I have ubuntu, started with an install of 7 then dist
upgrade to 8, starting with the pre-release and continuing on with daily
updates. I have firefox 3.0, again whatever is the latest from the
updates. I also have tried to install the java plugin, but not sure if I
have it right, here's why...

I am a Nascar fan, I subscribe to the trackpass program that uses a Java
applet to give live stats and such during a race. This used to work on
linux and continues to work fine if I reboot to windows, however it no
longer works with my linux setup. I have no idea how to troubleshoot. It
seems that the applet loads, runs fine, but sits and waits for race data
with a message to stand by for the race to start.

I have tried re-installing java plugins and now seem to have some java
version clutter, my fault due to bad housekeeping. My question really
boils down to, how do I set up any sort of debugging to see what's
happening and where to try to fix things? Java is somewhat of a mystical
art to me that I don't understand so have no idea where to look.
Compound this with the fact that I can only work on this during a race,
when I'd rather be watching it, and you get an idea of why I'm stumped.

FWIW I have checked syslogs and such, but of course there's nothing there.

Any ideas?
