Back in the olden days, they used to calculate things with a sly drool.
I remember the presentations at the International Congress on
Acoustics, 1956. Speech Recognition was just around the corner.
I saw it demonstrated by IBM at the 1962 World's Fair in Seattle. It
took a VERY large computer, but it could do simple arithmetic on verbal
command from the person giving the demonstration. Assuming there wasn't
a "man behind the curtain."
