Does anyone have a recommendation for a linux-happy, SMALL (Mini-ITX
would be awesome) motherboard that can:
* Take an Intel Core 2 Duo or Quad CPU
* Take 2GB (or more) of RAM
* Have one x16 PCI-e slot
* Two SATA ports
My Intel DG35EC fits all this. It's a MicroATX. It has 4GB DDR2 800
SDRAM installed (8GB max), an E6750 CPU (Core 2 Duo, 2.66GHz, 64-bit, a
300GB SATA drive (4 ports max), a 120GB ATA100 drive (for Linux) and
GeForce 8800GS Video card for extra punch for games. It can handle a
quad and 2 x1 PCI cards (in addition to the x16) and 1 PCI card.
Onboard chipset includes Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3500.
The only thing I don't like about the system is Vista (been too busy to
install Linux on it).
I'm thinking of building a Myth head-end that can locally play optical
media AND output full 1080p to an HDTV.
Bonus points for 5.1 or better sound subsystem with digital out (either
coax or optical).
Yes, it has that - Intel High Definition Audio (5.1 Surround sound), but
needs a case with the connectors on it as only the basic stereo outputs
are on the back of the MoBo. Also 10/100/1000 on-board NIC, 10 USB 2.0,
1 FireWire.
The system has a minimum number of fans in it and stays very cool (and
quiet).
Alternatively, will a Mac Mini (2.0GHz Core 2 Duo, Intel GMA 950) have
enough grunt to drive 1080p video, if that's ALL it would be doing?
Should I use the Mac Myth frontend, or just blow Mythbuntu on there?
I had a Mac Mini at Greenest Host. I liked it. It was a lower end
machine, but it was plenty fast. Never tried video on it so I couldn't
say if it was powerful enough for that.
