I've been looking at the Acer Aspire One myself, but Dell is coming
out with a subcompact 'netbook' soon (rumor is that their press
conference next Tuesday is to announce it) and I'd like to see how
that one looks before choosing what to buy.

Lenovo is also coming out with one next month, but I've already been
waiting for a few months and I'm getting impatient, so I probably
won't be able to stick it out until then.

Well, I'm not in a hurry on the subcompact. Right now, everybody on the subcompact front has "issues". Memory tends to be limited. Hard drive expandability seems to be an issue. External display connectors tend to be analog-only. Bluetooth isn't integrated. etc.

I'm guessing that the big issue is that the companies are still trying to maintain differentiation between the "subcompact" and "laptop" form factors. I've seen the disassembly pictures; there's no good reason for these restrictions. My guess is that they're trying not to have the subcompacts eat into their revenue from laptops (which have a higher profit margin).

That's not going to hold long.

There really isn't any difference between a "subcompact" and a "laptop" other than screen size and keyboard size that most people are going to notice.
