So, did they actually release Perl 6?

No, it hasn't been released. It's a bit of a weird situation: They have a spec and tests for perl 6. There is a suite of around 2600 tests. The tests are written in perl 6. So if the implementation passes those tests, it's perl 6. But there are something like 5 different perl 6 implementations. The most advanced is PUGS (written in Haskell) which this test suite was originally written for but is now being used by the other implementations (written in C, ruby, who knows what else) as well. But development on PUGS has stalled in recent months. So it isn't clear which one will prevail, if any. I'm wondering if they will end up with a Lisp-like situation where there is no one single implementation and whether that will marginalize perl. Or perhaps perl5 will reign forever kinda like Fortran 77 will never go away.
