I'm happy to say that finally a viable open source competitor to Mathematica
and Matlab has started to germinate..... sagemath.org . They even have servers
you can use for free to test drive it such as to make plots.
May want to check it out. (Yes it uses Maxima under the hood.)
I've become attached to Maple, which I purchased when I was going to
school. It was inexpensive enough (especially compared to Matlab), runs
on Linux, and can output resulting formulas in C and Matlab. The C
output is especially helpful for times when I need to write some code to
solve an equation (e.g. - most everything involving 3D).
I'll have to take a gander at sagemath.org.
