Yeah, that's another good point. I hadn't even considered _width_.

Hmmm, of course some wiseacre is always gonna try sending his ones out
sidewise, thereby raising the cost of the tubes not to mention
increasing the frequency response requirements of every node along the way.

As a potential further refinement, it may be worth adopting the old
telegraph (and subsequent serial transmission) protocol of making "mark"
 the default line state.
