Many self-taught programmers are not aware of algorithms and do not understand their use or implementation. I recently had the chance to make use of a bloom filter for the first time. I never would have known about that as a possible solution to my problem had I not studied some algorithms on my own. This link has lots of useful algorithms and implementations:

I kinda like studying things which I know are classic and will never change. It seems unlikely that a good knowledge of algorithms will ever be obsoleted. -- Tracy Reed http://tracyreed.org
