There are quite a few resources available online
  http://www.python.org/doc/
has a somewhat extensive "Tutorial" (by Guido van Rossum). But that
could be too much at once for some, so .. see next remarks.

The "Beginner's Guide to Python" link takes you to a page devoted to the
subject, and has links to a bunch of other resources. Specific book
references can be found on the subpage
  http://wiki.python.org/moin/IntroductoryBooks

Some of my favorites are available online. Look on the page above, for
the sections:
How to Think Like a Computer Scientist: Learning with Python
  Dive Into Python
both of these have online html or downloadable pdf, etc. If you have
troubles find your way to those, ask again.

Regards,
..jim
