by organizing a countywide recycling event Saturday for household
electronic devices that were banned from landfills in February.

Such collections have been hugely popular, drawing more than 3,000
residents to Qualcomm Stadium a few years ago. But San Diego's grant
funding for such events has dried up at the same time as demand is
growing.

Expanding interest in electronics recycling is driven by the recent
state prohibition against throwing numerous types of hazardous
household waste into the trash. Besides electronics, banned items
include batteries, some aerosol cans, fluorescent light tubes and
thermostats that contain mercury.
