Use the Ubuntu System->Administration->Device Manager and scroll down to to see what Ubuntu thinks your system sound card is. If it's using an alsa driver, you may need to unmute the using alsamixer application. Also, you might download the sox package to allow testing of the sound system from the command line: 'sudo apt-get install sox' (run 'locate *.wav' from the command line to find test files).
