OK, that would seem to consistent with k3b "trying hard" to find a
suitable burner.

It does look like other people are reporting that a dvd burner
"disappears" after upgrade to Ubuntu Feisty (7.04).

So, it's possible a fix is "in-the-works".

..But, how about collecting some more information?

If you know it, what is the make and model of your dvd.

If you run
  ls -ld /dev/dvd* /dev/cd*
what do you get?
(Just cut and paste the results into your reply)

Likewise with the results of
 ls -R /proc/ide
and
 cdrecord -scanbus

That's a start.
Perhaps someone else may jump in with more diagnostic suggestions.
