I would like to strongly agree with this last statement. There's always a possibly of making things worse when recovery operations go awry. If you have valuable data, you should be proceeding very cautiously! Even if it's only mildly important or annoying to have to reproduce, I suggest it might be wise to avoid repair efforts and concentrate on diagnosis. Copying the entire disk in a binary fashion _would_ be a good thing. This may be more than you need, but in the case of high-value data, one would probably make 2 copies -- one to stash away as a read-only safety copy, and one to perform recovery operations on.
