Press the alt key down while dragging. Icon of dragged item changes to
include a '?' indicating you will be prompted for disposition.

Then when you release the mouse (you can now release the alt, too), a
popup menu will ask whether to  Move/Copy/Link/Cancel.

My SOP is to _always_ use the alt, because I too often release the mouse
prematurely, causing something to be moved to someplace unintended --
and worse, I usually don't even notice where I dropped it <sigh>.

If anybody knows how to set drag to always prompt, please let me know!

This is another reason why I usually prefer the command line!
