I have a Centos 5.1 desktop system on an Abit motherboard. This
motherboard doesn't activate the case's HD LED when accessing an SATA

Is there a utility to put an indicator on the screen for SATA hard disk
activity? I've had a hard time trying to get the right keywords into
Google for this.

My favorite is gkrellm. <http://freshmeat.net/projects/gkrellm/>
Can be configured to show all sorts of things.
At the moment, I have it showing date, time, cpu0, cpu1, procs, sda,
sdb, sdc, sdd, eth0.
sda and sdb are internal SATA drives. sdc and sdd are external USB drives.

Got gkrellm. Thanks Carl. I had used it a long time ago but forgot about it.
