I have been doing some more Google searches, and find an on-line
excerpt from "Ubuntu For Non-Geeks, 3rd Edition" which says much the
same thing.
When I clock "Music" on the top bar menu, I get Import Folder as a
choice. I have tried both the main directory (4 subdirectories) and
just one of the subdirectories, and don't seem to get to where I can
play anything.
Must be really simple to do, since nobody bothers to explain it.
Perfectly intuitive. :-(
Dumb question: I go Music -> Import Folder
Choose a folder (directory) which for example is /data/transfer/Mozart
See that it has 4 subdirectories.
Now what do I do? Click 'Open Folder" and it takes me to "Music
Player" panel, and uses 100% CPU for quite a few seconds. But no
indication of how I make a selection to play.
My software says it is Rhythmbox 0.9.5
Late news. The 100% CPU was Rhythmbox deciding one at a time for some
96 files that either it didn't have an MP3 decoder or it couldn't
understand the MIME type of the file. Now I have installed the
intuitively-named "gstreamer-plugins-ugly" and can play the first 8
tracks, from the first subdirectory, but not the other 13. I guess
this is progress. I will have to look around to see what it did with
the rest of the music.
