Could you please learn to start a new message instead of replying to a
previous message and changing the topic? Most people on the mailing
lists use a threaded mail reader. Your actions cause a totally unrelated
topic to pop up in the middle of a discussion on "Rigging a house so all
rooms have wireless".

To answer your question, the easiest thing would be to rename the file
to have .doc extension. This wouldn't be right from a Microsoft
viewpoint but who cares? This might not work with OpenOffice because
your version of OpenOffice is so old. A more sophisticated approach
would be to change the file associations in your file browser to launch
OpenOffice for .docx files.

Also, your whole system is quite old and no longer has security updates
available. You should seriously consider upgrading.
