I cross postted this so the reply will show up on both lists. ?You may wish to

I used Heim joints for hinges when I built the new tail on my KR. ?I simply 
measured and marked the center of the spar (with plywood plates glued onto the 
spars), then bolted the hinges on with large area washers to help spread the 
loads on the wood. ?Photos of the spars with hinges is at 
<http://jscott.comlu.com/KR/tail.html> ?If you look through the photos on that 
page, you'll note that I also cut the elevator spar in two, so each half of the 
elevator is removable. ?I'll have the elevator off the plane again sometime in 
the next few weeks while my KR is going through another metamorphosis.
