It's been around since at least 2005 on various platforms and with ever-increasing capabilities.? It runs on full Windows, not CE or Mobile.? Until recently there haven't been any decent Windows tablets around so the company (AviationSafety - also called True Flight and Flight Cheetah) put together some proprietary Windows boxes with several different displays over the years.? It was always too bulky and too expensive for me, but I did admire the capabilities.? Finally there are some 8-inch Windows Tablets around.? True Flight is featuring the DELL Venue 8 Pro that came out in early 2013.? The Lenovo Mix 2 is another contender - the software will run on any of them.? The trick is to find something bright enough to see in a canopied cockpit.? The DELL DV8 Pro has been upgraded a couple times since it first came out but nits are still 400, same as the iPad.? And I can't see a damn thing on the iPad unless it's in the shade, so as with my little Anywheremap navigator I've been using for ten years I'll put a shade on it or figure something else out.? I haven't gotten to the "mounting" part of things quite yet - just doing a lot of thinking about it.? Flight Cheetah is a lot cheaper these days.? The entire package, software, plates, Sectionals, Vector graphics, Landsat, etc. can be had for $195.? It's hardly ever discussed on the various forums since the iPad has eaten everyones' lunch but those who have it have been using it for years and wouldn't give it up if you paid them to.? The developer keeps the data current and is always adding new tweaks and features. It's mature.? And neat as hell.? Rather than go on and on about the great features of this software I'll just post the link and those interested can get as deeply into it as they feel like.? There's a series of "Instructional Videos" on the site, using hardware that the company no longer uses but software logic and features are generally the same.? The MAIN thing I am impressed with is, without using AHRS (although you can attach one, along with ADS-B), the software provides synthetic vision and HITS and will guide you through boxes all the way to the runway threshold, using just GPS.? This feature is called an "approach overlay". You do have the actual charts but this program will guide you all the way through an approach visually, without having to actually look at the chart except to establish your MAP or MDA and brief yourself.? Once you pick your IAP you never need to look at anything else.? Something else I like is it has a complete set of Landsat images that shows you what's below those clouds or at night.? Your're basically positioned directly above Google Earth.? If not within range of a runway, this will at least allow one to pick a flat spot instead of a mountain to touch down in case of engine failure.? There's a lot to rave about when it comes to the features of this software but I'll shut up about it and just post the link below.? ? I haven't flown with it yet - still figuring out where and how I'm going to mount the DELL DV8 Pro.? I bought a newer model with a bigger SSD on eBay instead of getting the one True Flight sells.???The tablet is about the same size as an iPad Mini but even something that small is a challenge for my little office. It will output to any autopilot that accepts NMEA data and I had hopes of using the TruTrak ECO, but that one is still on hold for some reason . . . plus TrueTrak is selling them as a "kit" for particular planes, the RV-4 and RV-10 at this point - I think we've discussed this ECO situation.? They were supposed to start shipping this autopilot last September but when I recently talked to Lucas at TrueTrak, they are still waiting on components from their suppliers.? They have yet to ship one ECO.? I really like TruTrak . . . I hope this long delay with the ECO doesn't indicate more serious problems with the company.? With so many devices to choose from in a relatively very small market, it's gotta be hard for these companies to stay in business. Anyway, check out this Flight Cheetah.? If you're interested in IFR work and not quite ready to spent 12K or more on a used G-1000, this is the cat's meow. http://aviationsafety.com/ Mike KSEE ____________________________________________________________ Scribol.com 20 Female Celebrities Who Are Totally Different in Real Life http://thirdpartyoffers.juno.com/TGL3141/572f76bcdf5be76bc1a86st01vuc ------------------------------ Message: 2 Date: Sun, 8 May 2016 22:18:27 +0200 (CEST) From: "stefkr2 at kpnmail.nl" <stefkr2 at kpnmail.nl> To: Kr net Kr net <krnet at list.krnet.org> Subject: KR> fibre frax Message-ID: ??? <19780922.16591.1462738707139.JavaMail.defaultUser at defaultHost> Content-Type: text/plain;charset=UTF-8 Hi guys I need to order the fibre frax for the fire wall. Obviously a KR as about 2/3's to 1/2's? that. Should I make them narrower or thinner (i.e., split them to reduce the thickness by about 50%) or narrower (i.e., make the width about 1/3 less than they are now)? They measure 3 3/4" X 1" at the bottom and 7 3/4" X 1" at the top and are 26 1/2" long. I think the length is good, but the other dimensions will be too stiff. What do you guys think? Thanks. Mark W. I bought two of them since they were so inexpensive.? The DELL tablet I'm preparing to use as a navigator (at least some of the time) doesn't have a built-in GPS, although the newest model of the Venue 8 Pro, (Model 5855 I believe) releaased this last January DOES have one and it's probably excellent.? But my DV8P didn't come with one so I started looking at GPS options.???True Flight sends one with the software - it's the typical magnetic base puck-type with a cord terminating in a micro-USB plug that either plugs directly into DELL's single micro-USB port, or into the OTG dongle that you have plugged into the DELL's port.? I had ordered two of these little thumb-drive-sized GPS's by the time True Flight's GPS arrived so I just returned it.???I found them on eBay.? There's a bunch of technical information regarding their heritage and capabilities that only someone like Jeff Scott could appreciate - all I know is when I plugged it into a USB port it instantly knew where it was.? Under a solid roof it was showing a variable array between 9 and 13 satellites.? If I understood what I was reading on their website, these little things pick up (I think) seven different GPS systems.? Ours, Europe's, Russia's, Japan's and at least two more.? I didn't know there were so many.? But there's a lot I don't know.? The DELL can use a BT GPS and Flight Cheetah supports that function, but I like the direct connection of it plugged into the OTG power supply dongle.? It gets signals, somehow, wherever I take it.? I haven't yet found a place sufficient to interfere with GPS reception.???I thought GPS signals were fragile.? If the behavior of these little devices is any indication, GPS signals will go through anything. I was amazed that it was recently discovered that this processor was used in cell phones. I believe the phrase "suppressing radio RX noise from EFIS in compromised installations" is designed to imply "improper installation", but I've proven, with nothing more than the unit and a battery and an o-scope, that the only thing compromised about my installation is having that EFIS in the panel...
