You should have a turnbuckle on each cable.  If you don't, insert one on
each.  Tighten them to "tight".  You need to be sure not to tighten one more
than the other, because that will effectively make one shorter than the
other and you will notice a binding as you operate the elevator.

Your aileron cables should be "tight" also.

My opinion is that push tubes would not give you a return on investment, in
time and money, and that you should stick with the cables.
