Should be no problem at all. The vertical grain of the plywood is mainly what the shear web needs (radio controlled planes usually use only vertical balsa sheet) so vertical splices don't really loose any strenght. Also, as Dean pointed out, the scarfed ply is just as strong anyway.
I put all of my scarfs centered over the vertical spacers also to make it easy to clamp and glue them (waste of time to glue the scarfs and let them dry before assembling the spars) and so that strength of the scarf really is not a factor anyway.
