As Mark Jones said, it's not necessary, and I wouldn't advise putting
a heavy layer of glass over the wood.  I used 1.4 oz glass called deck
cloth ( that's 1 point 4 oz) over all my wood as well as the KR cloth
while laying up the wings and tail surfaces.  I think the lightweight
glass will resist the cracks you get in paint over time on the wood 
and I personally think the deck cloth gives a lighter layup over the
KR cloth than trying to fill the weave with filler.  Tony Bingelis also
suggested going that route in one of his books, especially over the
wood.  

I'm sure you could get a hundred different opinions on the subject
but it's your football so you can play the game any way you want !!
