When level, my Corvair dipstick tube extends 9.875" above the boss, and the oil level is 11.5" from the top of the tube, so the oil level is 1.625" below the top of the boss when the oil level is lower than the bottom of the lifter bores. This translates to almost exactly the center of the band between "full" and "add" on the factory diptick. I think there may be more than one length dipstick out there though, so use the 1.625" number to be sure.
