Guys, My father in law called about an hour ago and told me that he heard on the scanner that hanger 18 was on fire (mine is 73 but I didn't know where 18 was) The first truck was on the scene and the second 2 were just arriving as I was out the door. It is about 5 miles away from home to the airport and my father in law said that the sky was pink from his house about 1 mile south of the airport. As I got to about 1 1/2 miles away I could see the plume of smoke and steam and a news helicopter hovering above. By now the fire Co. had the roads blocked off and it was not clear from where I was exactly where the fire was. They were motioning to exit the road onto a side street but that wasn't my plan. I drove up to them and told the firepolice that I wanted to know if my plane was in danger. They told me that it was a building off the airport property. That's when I realized that it was closer to my hanger than I had thought because the building they were talking about is no more than 50 yards from the end of my hanger row. I made the turn that they wanted but not trusting everything would be alright I weaved around through the factory parking lots across the street from the airport until I got to the edge of the one directly across from the fire and could see for myself. By now they had it pretty well knocked down and a truck was set up between the hangers and the fire. The wind that was fairly brisk was blowing across the runway and away from the hangers. Being satisfied that the past 10 years of work wasn't going up in smoke, My heart restarted and I headed back home for a good night sleep and a adrenaline recharge. The weather looks great for tomorrow afternoon. More to come.
