I may be in error, but it seems I remember being told
that in a cross control situation. The fuselage is blocking
some of the relative wind to the downwind wing.

And if the pitot is on the upwind wing you are getting a true indication of 
airspeed on the upwind wing but not the downwind wing.

Therefore it may be possible to stall the downwind wing
while getting a safe airspeed indication.
