ARP BOLTs? Do you mean STUDs? If that's what his newest manual says, I'd be amazed, so please quote me a few lines when you get a chance. He DOES advocate replacing the eight CASE BOLTS with ARP studs for high output engines such as the 3100cc, but if he now advocates replacing all the head studs, I'll gladly stand corrected, but would personally not see the need for it, having never pulled a stud out of the case when torquing a head (or otherwise). Not only would buying 24 ARP head studs (if there's any such thing) be expensive, they may also require using threaded inserts in all the case holes. The original studs are not exactly 3/8-16 threads, they are a strange self threading variety with somewhat flattened threads. I just searched WW's web site (it's lunch time) and there are about 15 hits for ARP rod and CASE studs, but only one mention of ARP head studs. So maybe there is such a thing and that's what he's recommending these days. My opinion would be this is a means of reclaiming a good case that has rusted or damaged head studs, by replacing all the studs, but I personally don't see the need if that's not the case. I don't know how much these cost, but Clark's Corvair sells their replacement head studs for $14 each, so we're talking $340 here. I would think ARPs are even more expensive. You might have better luck selling a Corvair engine on the CorvAircraft list, which you can join by sending a message to corvaircraft-j...@mylist.net. It would be interesting to see the debate when you mention the studs all being removed...
