I hope someone hasn't suggested this as I haven't been reading all posts. If you want the tail spring to be composite, why not make it out of round fiberglass rod? Those are easily found in aircraft supply catalogs or through industrial suppliers. It could be set up somewhat like a Quickie but would have to build a mount on the fuselage to hold the rod. Might not save any weight in the end.
