I had a broken oil control ring on my Pacer and it was hard to tell looking
at the plug after a short run that it was not just running rich. Sometimes
the plug is wet and oily, but sometimes it just looks like carbon.

I don't know if you would notice an oil ring problem with a compression test
though.

I would suggest you perform a cylinder leakage test using compressed air.
You may find a ring or valve problem on one or more cylinders.
