It's coming up fast and Sun n Fun will soon be past. Last year as we flew into Oshkosh, the notams said you must monitor ATIS prior to reaching Ripon staging area. Ha, that was a joke. There was nothing but static on the frequency and ATIS was not receivable until you were already in the approach pattern. If ATIS had been readable, we would have been informed of a lot of approach info including active runways, approach routes in use, etc. Well, according to the FAA, this will not be the case this year. There have been several changes in the new Notam and the frequency for ATIS is one of them. The FAA has set up a special frequency for this event and have also installed a higher powered transmitter in order for pilots to be able to receive ATIS information for quite some distance out before ever reaching the Ripon staging point. This is good news. I just hope the install a high powered strobe light at the staging point in Ripon. No one in our group of five KR's ever seen the strobe except for me. The only reason I seen it was that I had made two practice approaches to Oshkohs in the preceding month and I knew exactly where it was. That strobe looked like a camera flash. Anyway, start your planning and get your Notam. The printed book version of the Notam will be mailed out in May and you can order yours for free now on the EAA Airventure web site.
