Like a lot of folks that looked at the recommended shelf attachment I was a 
little skeptical of the strength. But I think the shelf can be used. What I did 
was to used a 4" x ΒΌ" plywood above and below the top longerons with 5/8" stock 
from side to side in the front and rear of these shear webs. I also sandwiched 
4" x 5/8" stock at the seat belt bolt locations and extending to the front and 
rear cross pieces so the attachment bolt wouldn't crush the shear webs. Mark is 
correct about the angle of the belts also, in fact I can't remember which of 
Tony's books it is but he goes into detail about cockpits, seat belts, angles 
and attachments. Since I am 6'5" I built my fuselage deeper than most and my 
shelf is directly behind my shoulders.
