Like a lot of folks that looked at the recommended shelf attachment I was a little skeptical of the strength. But I think the shelf can be used. What I did was to used a 4" x ΒΌ" plywood above and below the top longerons with 5/8" stock from side to side in the front and rear of these shear webs. I also sandwiched 4" x 5/8" stock at the seat belt bolt locations and extending to the front and rear cross pieces so the attachment bolt wouldn't crush the shear webs. Mark is correct about the angle of the belts also, in fact I can't remember which of Tony's books it is but he goes into detail about cockpits, seat belts, angles and attachments. Since I am 6'5" I built my fuselage deeper than most and my shelf is directly behind my shoulders.
