If it hasn't already been mentioned,

In many circles the seal you are describing is known as a 'form-in- 
place' seal.  Working on military aircraft myself, we sometimes use  
tricks like wax paper, tape and even plastic wrap.  More commonly, we  
use a spray-on Silicone Release Agent.  Assures a perfectly formed  
seal, cleans up very easily with iso-propanol and won't interact with  
sealants.
