You might check on flying in to Evansville, Indiana or Marion, Illinois. Both would be an additional commuter flight but the one from Marion, Illinois to St.Louis is $50 each way but you would miss the big city and big city airport other than passing through St.Louis. Marion, Illinois is 40 miles south of Mt.Vernon, has car rentals, and is as easy entry and exit to the airlines as you'll find anywhere. Also, the interstate runs from Marion to Mt.Vernon.
