My previous post on this subject apparently failed to go through the mail
servers...

This discussion can turn into a real can of worms with unending questions.
I'll try to convey the information I got from the head of the Albuquerque FSDO
as I am peripherally involved with two planes that have expired registrations,
so have had extensive discussions with the FAA on this subject.

If one fails to renew the registration and allows it to expire, the "N" number
is dropped from the FAA registry and can not be re-issued for 5 years. Since
the airworthiness is tied to the registration number, this also voids the
airworthiness certificate. Whether Certificated or Experimental, if one was to
buy a plane with an expired federal registration, you would have to apply to
the FAA for a new registration number, then have an airworthiness inspection
done by either the FAA or a DAR. This is the same inspection we get for the
issuance of our original airworthiness certificate. For a Certificated
aircraft, you would still have to have the FAA or a DAR do a type certificate
conformity inspection on the aircraft to issue a new airworthiness certificate.
All STCs and 337s filed on that aircraft would still be valid as they are tied
to the serial number of the aircraft.

So what happens if you don't renew in time - say, because the registration
expired when someone else owned the plane?
