Good discussion I have found some online info that backs up your friends concerns. However most of what I have found related to their use in race cars and I am confident that we are not loading these to that extreme. I will be interested in seeing where this goes.
http://americansolarchallenge.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/rod_end_calculations.pdf "Since the rod ends are specifically designed for axial loading, axial stresses, in most cases, are not the critical issue here. The critical issue is the bending stress induced by a shear load (Fs) for which the rod end is not designed. It would be safe to assume that most of the rod end failures are the result of excessive bending stresses in the stud due to the presence of shear loads." I have them on the elevator and Rudder. He says he has seen many of these used on the timber gliders, and have seem the snap off at the end of the bolt thread holding the REB to the spar. The way they stopped the braking was to greatly increase the REB size. He says they are NOT designed to carry the load on its side, they were designed to use on the END of the rush rod ( to push and pull) as the name implies. He has looked at the KR2S plans and says the original KR2 hinges are much better and safer and will carry the side ways load. SO, one has to consider making new hinges.
