My cable was fairly short since I had the linear gear rack to rotary
contraption mounted on the back side of the firewall. My cable was
somewhere around a foot or so long IIRC and had no issues with flex or
leaking.

I removed the choke from mine and welded blocks on two intake manifolds
right where they went into the heads and threaded for primer nozzles and
it worked great. I didn't like the idea of a choke that could
accidently get closed, but if you are careful a choke if O.K.

I have a Zenith carb on my GPASC 2180 VW. I rigged a mixture control
using
a VW speedometer cable. The mixture needle has too much friction from
the
sealing gasket. The speedometer cable will wind up a full turn or more
before enough torque is applied to turn the needle. I will need both
hands
to do a mixture change. If I loosen the gland nut enough to smooth out
the
turning action, then fuel will leak around the needle shaft and drip on
the
cowl and exhaust pipe. Until I can find a better control arrangement, I
have set the mixture to what seems about right, tightened the needle
gland
nut and don't attempt further mixture changes while the engine is
running.
Far from satisfactory since I have three systems for showing mixture
operation: 4 cylinder head temperature sensors, 4 EGT sensors and a
digital
14point7 Mixture Meter, and still cannot change the mixture setting in
flight.
Choke operation for starting and smoothing out running for warm up works

great.
Incidentally, the Great Plains carb model numbers are not the Zenith
carb
model numbers. The Great Plains carb model numbers correspond to the
approximate displacement of the VW engines.
