I had it back in the air in a few months, after replacing virtually 
every piece of the VW "long block". The picture at the bottom is a 
pretty sobering reminder of something Type 1 VW engines do quite often 
in automotive use, but fortunately not so often in airplane 
engines....likely because we keep the valves adjusted better than most 
VW drivers do/did!
