Larry is in the right direction. At Velocity we put a carbon fiber sock over 
the gear to stiffen it. The sock is like the old Chinese finger thing that you 
would get as a kid where the more you stretch it out the tighter it gets. 
Search online for it. It comes in various widths. Layer a couple layers over 
where you think it is the weakest.
