we can't patch our master source (drop getconf builtin) on such short turnaround
the build and packaging system that includes ksh also uses ksh
so we (I) have to be certain that such a change won't bring it
down like a house of cards

in a larger shop this may seem crazy (base everything on the latest)
but it has been a good plan for the 3 main ast owners (korn vo fowler)
it exposes stupid bugs/errors right away and nudges the owners to
maintain and extend (fairly) comprehensive regression tests
and it means we use what we post
indeed the posts themselves used what we post

this is not a showstopper, but its also not something I can
commit to right this second until its affect on the big picture
(sun + everything else) is clear -- which I believe will be tomorrow
