I could have told you that with just one error message
no ast diagnostics contain the word "illegal"
(aha, a double check yielded one in ksh93 "%s: illegal function name")

did you do "package make" first to get ksh93 built and in scope?
subsequent package invocations would then use that ksh along
with the ast command installed in $INSTALLROOT/bin and especially
the ast date accessed as a builtin via the ast -lcmd
