AFAIK Mike/James did answer most of the part.
The basic problem is that ksh93 implements the POSIX standard for any
builtin command and does not include vendor-specific extensions. The
approval we've got now means we can port some of the Solaris extensions
(like the ACL extensions added to /usr/bin/chmod and needed for ZFS and
NFSv4) to ksh93 and (more important) contribute them to "upstream"
(David Korn && Glenn Fowler) which would simplify the maintaince, e.g.
we would not have to maintain two versions of the same command (instead
we share one implementation which is centered around the POSIX&co.
standarts).
