paste(1) can't paste the delimiter which consists of multibyte characters.
$ echo $LANG
ja
$ od -tx1 delim.euc
0000000 a1 f7 0a
0000003
$ wc -m delim.euc
2 delim.euc
So, it has one character of 2bytes (0xa1 0xf7).
$ od -tx1 input
0000000 61 0a 62 0a
0000004
$ /usr/bin/paste -d`cat delim.euc` - - < input | od -tx1
0000000 61 a1 62 0a
0000004
$
The last half of delimiter (0xf7) is lost.
