Detection of New Storage devices sometimes fails.
Even if udev detects and creates the appropriate device files, the drives are
then still unavailable to the GUI.
One must drop to a command shell and mount the device, creating any mountpoints
necessary, and using the long-method of mounting since no entry appears in
/etc/fstab. All of these are the responsibility of hotplug's handler scripts.
Sometimes it simply takes a very long time. Other times it does not happen at
all.
SuSE is quite successful in this arena, including their use of "subfs" for
mounting removeable media like CDROMs and USB drives. Perhaps inspecting their
methodology might help. The current Ubuntu direction seems outdated.
